Merry was one of the most kind-hearted and would make for a good bearer if it wasn't for his clumsiness. Pippin was the most mischievous and boisterous of the lot, so he would likely be ruled out as a first pick. Shelob’s lair was dark, wretched, and perilous to navigate. As part of Gollum’s scheme to take the Ring back for himself, he led Frodo and Sam to the lair of the great spider Shelob.
